Do you remember this movie – Reality Bites?
It holds a very special place in my heart for numerous reasons. Back when I was fourteen MTV was still a music channel, Winona Ryder was popular, Ben Stiller was a virtual unknown, and Ethan Hawke was still hot. Oh, and the first CD I ever bought was a Reality Bites soundtrack.
I must confess that at that age the title sounded confusing to me. The only reality I knew back then was related to adolescent turmoil, which is why the only thing that concerned me was the love triangle. At that age, it was a given for me that I would never ever have to compromise, that I would be whoever I wanted to be. The part of the story where Winona’s character has to choose between staying true to herself and advancing in her career just flew over my head. Now almost twenty years later, with all the shit under my belt, its meaning eludes me no more. Now I know life is quite a bit different than what you imagine it to be as a pubescent teen.
This is a classic example that proves that we never see the same movie with the same eyes twice. Discovering new meaning is probably the biggest reason why I love re-watching movies.
I am not going to ask you about your compromises, but rather, I want to ask you to NOT give in to the reality that bites. Reality consists of your thoughts, your perspective on the things that happen around you. Reality is not something outside of ourselves. It is what we make it out to be. So I want each and every one of you to find a way to look at life so that at the end of the day you can say “I’m happy”.
